New Year, New Space: Simple Organization Tips to Spark Joy in 2025
Before using desk organizer.
After using desk organizer.
Let’s talk about the magic of January. There’s something about the start of the year that makes me want to roll up my sleeves, tackle the clutter, and breathe new life into my space. Anyone else feel the same?
A few years ago, I went all-in on the Marie Kondo method. I spent weeks holding every item in my house, asking myself if it sparked joy. I know it sounds cliché, but it truly was life-changing. My home felt lighter, my mind felt clearer, and I swore I’d keep it that way forever.
Fast forward to today: I don’t have the time (or patience) to Marie Kondo my entire house again. But you know what? Tackling one overcrowded drawer or out-of-control cabinet at a time still gives me those sparks of joy.
A Different Take on Decluttering
Recently, I came across a decluttering approach that’s, well, a little crass—but weirdly effective. Stick with me here:
If the item had poop on it, would you throw it away or clean the poop off and keep it?
Gross, right? But also, kind of genius! It’s such a simple way to ask yourself: Is this really worth keeping? If it’s a no, toss it. If it’s a yes, give it the attention it deserves.
This little mental trick has helped me let go of so many “maybe someday” items that were just taking up space. (I’m looking at you, drawer full of promotional items)
A Small Change That Made a Big Difference
Speaking of random clutter, let’s talk about my car’s middle console. It was a black hole of receipts, gum wrappers, pens, and who-knows-what-else. But then, inspiration struck: I added a small desk organizer to wrangle the chaos, and now it’s a thing of beauty. Everything has its place, and my car feels so much calmer.
The takeaway? Organization doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, it’s the smallest changes—like a drawer here or a car console there—that make the biggest difference.
